But I had pretty humble beginnings, and I can tell you that wherever you are in your real estate career right now, I’ve been there too. You see, I got into real estate in my mid twenties. I’d flunked out of college and university and was living in my parents’ basement working as a janitor at the local hospital. I kind of got into real estate by default, really, because my dad was a real estate agent. Knowing my track record for not sticking with anything, though, my Dad actually tried to talk me out of getting into the business, but I jumped in anyway.
Now, my dad tried to help me the best way he could, but what he knew was all the old traditional stuff. I mean that’s what most of us do right? We get into Real Estate and we look around at what all the other agents are doing and we copy them. That’s what I did. In fact, I did everything they told me to do, but by the end of my first year, I was failing. Miserably. So miserably that I wanted to quit.
But here’s the problem … I had nowhere else to go! All I had was a high school diploma, so failure was not an option – I had to make real estate work for me. And that’s how my Real Estate Success System was born – through my own necessity to find a different and better way to do this business because I hated cold calling, door knocking, and all the other traditional drudgery we are taught to do. So, I began studying other industries outside of real estate, attending marketing seminars in other industries to learn what made other businesses successful. I had to do this because when I went to real estate seminars I found they were all teaching more of the same stuff. And you know what they’re teaching you? They’re teaching you MORE …. More referrals, more networking, more doorknocking, more of the same stuff.
